Chile earthquake

Another earthquake has shaken the American continent. Chile fell victim to an earthquake that measure 8.8 on the Richter scale last week. Although Chile has a stronger economy, it is struggling to recover from its recent experience with natural disaster as its government had initially refused international aid and seemed to have underestimated the scale of damage. Political leadership aside, the country will face food and water shortages. Looting will be a problem. While looting is illegal, many looters take food items illegally owing to a genuine need to basic necessities. International aid has been slow as well.

As Haiti and Chile remain at the forefront of recovery efforts, Taiwan has just been hit with an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale. Expert claim that nothing is amiss, with Taiwan susceptible to earthquakes. There were 16 earthquakes last year with magnitude 7 or higher. There have been just 3 this year.

Indeed it is difficult to determine if the recent spate of earthquakes will become an anomaly. One is also reminded of Jesus’ predictions about the last days, when there will be more earthquakes. As we are reminded of how this world will not last, let us be driven by this truth to pray for the countries of Haiti, Chile and Taiwan as they recover from these natural disasters. Pray for swift relief efforts and that their governments will be wise in dealing with recovery efforts. Much political will is needed, especially in Haiti and Chile. In the midst of suffering and unanswerable questions, let us also be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks of the reason we have for the hope we hold onto.
